Question: How does search work?

The search box at the top of each page can help you search through almost everything in LitHive. You can find books, text within books, beings (i.e. people), hives, comments, discussions, and even vouchers that give you discount on book purchases.

AND - ‘cat dog’ will find records matching ‘cat’ AND ‘dog’.

NOT - ‘cat -dog’ will find records matching ‘cat’ AND NOT ‘dog’

INCLUDE - ‘cat +me’ will find records matching ‘cat’ and ‘me’, even if ‘me’ is smaller than themin_word_size

“” - Quoted terms are matched as phrases. ‘“cat dog”’ will find records matching the whole phrase. Quoted terms can be preceded by the NOT operator; ‘cat -“big dog”’ etc. Quoted terms can include words shorter than the min_word_size.

^ - Terms that begin with ^ will match records that contain a word starting with the term. ‘^cat’ will find matches containing ‘cat’, ‘catapult’, ‘caterpillar’ etc.

^“” - A quoted term that begins with ^ matches any phrase that begin with this phrase. ‘^“cat d”’ will find records matching the whole phrases “cat dog” and “cat dinner”. This type of search is useful for autocomplete inputs.

Question: Is this service free?

The basic service (which really isn't that basic) is free but we do offer some "premium" services for a modest fee and/or revenue share. See our pricing page for more info.

Question: Why should I add a discussion board or other community features to my writing project?

It is our experience that discussions and fan pages create and sustain more interest in a project and subsequent related projects over the long-term by creating a living book experience for readers.

Question: Can I customize or re-negotiate the legal terms for this site?

e worked with a number of publishing pros and really fancy lawyers to come up with terms that were exceedingly friendly, flexible and fair with the hope that they would be sufficient for most. In general, we really do not like paying those fancy lawyers large sums of money, so we hope that the terms will work for you as-is.

Question: Do you use Digital Rights Management?

No, we do not. Based upon our experience, we believe that its better for readers and ultimately for publishers to avoid Digital Rights Management (DRM) for these types of projects.  However, once you've saved your project to the standard epub3 format, you may choose to apply DRM if you wish.

We do automatically include an attribution and link-back with any text copied from books published here. Try it by going to a book like this one and copy and paste some text from the book to somewhere else and see that what you pasted automatically contains an attribution and link back to the book - it's pretty cool.

Question: Can you help me crowd-fund my writing project?

In short, yes.

We provide two different mechanisms for you to crowd-source your writing project. The first is that you may link your book to an external crowdfunding platform like indiegogo.com or kickstarter.com when setting up your book.  Open the "Extra Settings" area in your book setup and enter the crowd-funding link to your project in the field as depicted below.

The second way of crowd-funding your project is to use the our built-in pricing system (see below) to create offers corresponding to crowd-funding levels and enter a description of what promise you are making for each level.

Question: Are you a publisher? Do you fund writing projects?

We are not a publisher ourselves, but rather, we focus on providing the means for writers, editors, and publishers to publish and monetize their own work.  We do not have any immediate plans to fund any writing projects.

Question: Can I publish erotic or adult-oriented stories here?

We generally do not want to be in the business of censoring anyone, so, to the extent that content does not violate any laws that we are required to comply with, then our plan is to generally leave it up to the LitHive community and community managers to determine what they do and do not want to see here.

That being said, we cannot be 100% sure what will happen.

To get started, we have created a public Hive for erotica with appropriate tags in which we ask that all adult-oriented work be self-tagged. Ultimately, the goal is to help writers create and sell their work, so we want to be careful that we do not organize things so as to stigmatize anyones work. Ultimately, we will have to trust the community to make its own decisions, so let the debate begin.

Question: How are payments setup? There isn't anywhere to add SSN info, etc.

We use a very reputable service named Stripe to handle all of our e-commerce including payments to publishers. Stripe is a PCI-compliant e-commerce provider meaning that it meets or exceeds certain commercial and government financial and security standards for handling financial transactions.

The way that Stripe works, LitHive never sees nor stores anyone's credit card or other sensitive personal information.  We only hold a bit of information that lets us verify that a financial transaction that we requested has been completed successfully.

There is literally no way for us to see anyones financial or credit card details even if we wanted to.  We love this approach because it means that it is not possible for us to compromise any of your sensitive information.

The easiest way to receive payment is to get a Stripe account at stripe.com using the same email address that you use at LitHive . Alternately we can make arrangements for PayPal as well.

Question: How do I setup pricing for my book?

You set the pricing for your book by first selecting the pricing option from your publishing dashboard as depicted below.

Then you create one or more "offer" options for ways that someone can receive your book as depicted below.

You may choose to price your book on a one-time basis or on a subscription basis or you may also offer it for free or free to anyone who has registered with an email address matching one or more specific domains (i.e. the part of an email address after the '@' symbol).

Question: Why do I need a publishing plan before I can publish my book?

You need to select a publishing plan (a comprehensive FREE plan is available) as depicted below before you can actually publish your book in order to set the legal terms and business terms by which your book is published.

We worked with a number of publishing pros and really fancy lawyers to come up with terms that were exceedingly friendly, flexible and fair with the hope that they would be sufficient for most. In general, we really do not like paying those fancy lawyers large sums of money, so we hope that the terms will work for you as-is.

Question: How do I publish my book?

You publish your book by selecting the 'publish' option from your publishing dashboard as depicted below. Also, note the status showing how many of the sections of your book are currently published.

Gary Gary , Hive Master | almost 10 years ago
Question: Is there a way to limit access to your project to certain people until you're ready to make it more broadly available to the LitHive community?

Yes. When you start a project it is visible only to you, then you can click on the 'Team' button in your publishing dashboard as depicted below  and add your team members via their email addresses as either a "keeper"  or a "writer".

Keepers have almost all the same permissions as you, the book creator, so that you can delegate administrative tasks to others if you like and "writers" can only edit content but cannot see or manage all of the other project details.

Question: How do I hide my book until I am ready to publish it?

All books are created as unpublished and no one can see it but you or those that you designate.
